the eleventh release of tiefenrausch sets the start for the third cycle of five deep techno releases. coming up with a four track ep by upwellings who contributes his duby “tales from the underworld” to the tiefenrausch catalogue. with “echoes from the past” upwellings brings the entrance into this musical journey. the immersive groove of “stones lullaby” takes us into the deepness of this laid-back dubtechno sound. “when the lights fade away” is the dancefloor focused tune on the b-side of the vinyl while “hearing the solar wind” covers the ambient side of the genre and brings us back to the shore. the release is designed by alex ketzer who joins in for a collaboration with the illustrators magdalena paz and florian gassmann for the next five releases of the tiefenrausch label. the audio is mastered by salz music and the ep comes shrink wrapped.

picking up where they left off three years ago, modern heads, the much-respected collaboration between gianluca meloni and dino sabatini, are back with a dynamic and intriguing four track ep. the duo go straight in here with the club-ready athena. throughout this track, tight percussive elements wind in and around one another, creating an ever-changing rhythm that you can only just hold onto. under this, tense synths pulse away, producing an opaque and insular atmosphere. next up, eumaeus lightens the mood somewhat, providing clarity with a distinct opening drum pattern. this mood doesnt last long though, as indiscernible, haunting vocals begin to echo in the distance, gradually moving closer and further in the mix as sharp pads swoosh either side. side b of the record opens with the deepest and longest track of the ep, eurycleia. simple yet unrelenting drums frame this hypnotic sci-fi episode, through which otherworldly screeches and rumbles reverberate over the twinkling sounds of machines. eurycleias atmosphere continues straight into the final track, laertes theme. this beatless piece takes eurycleias exploratory mood and extrapolates it over five and a half minutes, resulting in what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a glacial expedition in alien territory. as an ep this is a complete and coherent package, a perfect extension to modern heads previous work. the sound palette is familiar, yet refined, developed upon and taken further. the old beggar is undeniably worth the wait for anyone with a taste for the extraterrestrial.

astonishing results from deeper diving into unknown ebm-techno waters.

life garden was formed in phoenix, arizona during the fall of 1989 by george dillon, su ling and w. david oliphant. the group was the reinvention of post-industrial band maybe mental (1982-1987) and delved into an ineffable territory, where language failed, their music found root. yogi says tip! life garden s sound focused on creating a space that would transcend people to a world of beauty, intensity and mystery. each release was loosely guided by one member, caught between the tapestry of silence and beauty (1991) was focused towards the poetry and vocals of george dillon who sadly passed away after the completion of the album.

dsc welcomes back boris bunnik, this time under his conforce moniker. two contrasting tracks are the offering. heavy thump introduces kernal of truth. angular melodies are painted on glass as a complex composition unfurls under the strain of galvanized percussion. the aquatic -oasis- occupies the flip. notes gentle lap a shoreline of burbling bass and distant percussion. echoes are submerged, folded in on themselves, as absorbing ambience envelops. two wonderfully different sides to the conforce sound.

bleep. easily one of the most influential sounds to grow out of the burgeoning electronics scene of the late 80s. nowadays, easily one of the most overlooked genres. but not around njimgen. shipwrec are turning some deserved attention to those pioneering plinks and plonks for a 12- homage to the trailblazers of the sound, lfo. quadratschultz provides the material, the german artist serving a warehouse brewed, acid spiked, tribute to mark bell and gez varley. posthuman ruffle the edges that bit more with a bleary eyed 303 monster before countryman fah gives basslines a steroid injection for a thick and meaty mix. varley closes with a tribute to his former group. his lfo remix might be a solo endeavour but it has all the raw unrefined dancefloor energy that characterised the music of a certain pair of young lads from leeds cerca 1990. bleep bliss.

the always trustworthy sound carrier label steps back into the limelight to hit us with another fix of quality techno from monsieur chris carrier. the parisian producer never stops making music, and he presents three new extra terrestrial cuts here on this latest instalment from his excellent label. the story here is about two powerful intergalactic beings who discover that they have been lied to by their leaders - there are no magic mushrooms, just a forest of poisoned ones. they have laid down their arms to discuss this despicable turn of events… track one is a rolling slice of analogue techno with acid licks and squelches bubbling away at its core. named ‘cat’s eye nebula’ it sucks us in to an interplanetary vortex, with cosmic fx transporting to the interior of a spaceship, while the beats give the feeling of a bumpy ride into the cosmos. this is followed by the more composed solemnity of ‘galactus’. shuffling beats slide over a funky bassline, the outer space theme continues with carrier implementing a series of manipulated sounds which convey the feeling of futuristic machinery, blinking dashboards or robots communicating with one another. finally, we have ‘dark poison’, the inspiration behind the whole ep. more deep 303 vibes on this with a simmering analogue riff, percussion which increases in intensity alongside several layers of melodramatic effects, high-pitched twinkles and chimes which really add to the tension

experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with new birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by wu-tang clan, de la soul, junior m.a.f.i.a., black sheep, lil wayne, ice cube, and many more. the genesis of new birth can be traced back to the nite-liters, a louisville-based instrumental outfit. founded in 1963 by motown songwriter/producer harvey fuqua and saxophonist tony churchill, the nite-liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power new birth to further success as the decade progressed. while much of the the nite liters’ early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. originally released on rca records in 1970, the nite liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by kmd, ghostface killah and others.

seminal mood ii swing production remixed by uk cutting edge producer pearson sound for nervous records. one of the most memorable house music anthems from nycs golden era of house has been given the 2016 treatment by pearson sound. learn 2 luv features lead vocals by one of house music’s greatest voices, kim english. originally produced by mood ii swing in 1997, it quickly became a favourite of legendary producer francois k, who subsequently added his atmospheric mood mix to the package.

blitz the ambassador more organic rap meets west african sounds from ghana. the visionary sound of blitz the ambassador has been years in the making, with each album crafted to reflect a sonic and visual narrative unique to blitz s personal experience. his fourth studio album diasporadical exemplifies this trajectory. blitz spent a great deal of time traveling between accra, salvador bahia and brooklyn experiencing the similarities between the african diaspora. the album title diasporadical was born out of this experience blitz explains. the radical notion that no matter how fragmented the african diaspora is, the influence of rhythm and spirituality remains largely the same.

i walked by night is a new label created with the ethos that comes from the foundations of any good resident dj, that of good selection. label boss krysko, who has held residencies for over 16 years, brings his experience to his new label. the debut release comes from tristan grace, a uk based artist (aliases - oe & prime time crew). raised propping up record store counters on the south coast since his early teens, now lives pretty isolated from current club culture. nothing beats being in the storm of a dance floor, but being able to step away from the pull and draws of the scene allows him to diarise his occupational exposure through trax. inspiration from the motor city and acid sound lies at the heart of what he does. influenced by rolling green hills, and surrounded by the analog soul of his machines - he has an addiction to vintage machines of asian origin, valves, and its fair to say, he lives his life in 16 step sequence. the furse ep moves across the width of his sound, and this being his debut release on i walked by night, there will be many more to come.

blawans new side project bored young adults is up next on will bankheads label the trilogy tapes. the shy dancers on bungalowdorf beach features some restrained and slow burning techno experiments that differ from jamie roberts more usual hard-hitting sounds. the seething title track treads the same path as kassem mosse or vactrol park. the fentanyl techno of but we need this bench sounds like an old regis record played on 8, while devoted fans of the young uk producers sound will get something a bit more familiar on the menacing hypnotic techno grinder check up from the neck up.

simo cell returns to livity sound for the label’s final release of 2016. following up his debut 12” for the label in 2015, the parisian brings his varied tastes to this diverse four tracker. from the hazy bumping rhythms of ‘gliding’ to the pulsating strobed snare assault of ‘away from keyboard’, these razor edge productions demonstrate exactly why he’s been tipped by so many as one to watch.

sascha borchardt aka monoloc is a dystopic atmospheres fanatic that has dedicated his life to the dance floor from an early age. the frankfurt-born artist’s raw yet sleek take on techno and ambient has evolved to characterise his own musical style in his productions. monoloc’s sound is a mixture between techno, dub and ambient, nurturing a tone that is driving, groovy and low-slung, but with greater emotional range. he acquires most of his inspiration from old movies and likes to work mostly with field recordings in his productions. ‘the untold way’ on dystopian is his second album, following his first in 2012, and shows a notably matured development in the artist’s style.
